Funerals
Christian funerals reflect a variety of responses to the experience of death. On one hand, those who gather acknowledge grief, anxiety, and a number of other emotions arising out of their sense of loss; the reality of death must not be denied. Yet the funeral is not simply an expression of anguish and despair. There is room for thanksgiving even in the midst of mourning. Through our worship of God, we have opportunity to know joy and hope.
In the Funeral Liturgy Christians proclaim that not even death can separate us from God's love. We make such a bold profession because of the context in which those who have died are remembered -- we offer thanks for their lives in the context of Christ's death and resurrection. It is because of Jesus Christ, crucified and risen, then, that we have reason to celebrate today, even as we must face the death of a loved one. Confident in God's goodness, we gather to give thanks for God's grace in Jesus Christ, and for the many ways God's love has been revealed through God’s children.
